Kollywood Kollage

The movie buff in me often absorbs noteworthy monologues and dialogues from various films, particularly those belonging to Kollywood, the cinema of Tamil Nadu. I exhibit this knowledge in everyday parlance by often pulling in references from the countless movies I have feasted my eyes upon.

My designer persona further wanted to capture these moments visually and decided to experiment with the technique of making digital collages to display the humour and genius abilities behind these scripts.

Every collage here expresses vivid, memorable dialogues from various Tamil movies. With the actor who delivered the dialogue as the main focal element, several visual elements derived from the dialogues are scattered throughout to weave a complete picture.

The Kollages

The first three collages cover some of the absolutely memorable dialogues which have been embedded deep into my mind.

The first collage depicts a dialogue by actor Santhanam from the movie "Pattathu Yaanai". The dialogue "Idli, mallipoo madhiri irukanum, yelai la vekkardha, illa iva thalai la vekkardha nu kozhpara madhiri irukanum!" translates to "The idli should be like a jasmine flower, I should get confused as to where to place it, whether on the leaf plate or on her head?". Emphasis being laid on the idli and the jasmine flower on Santhanam's hair elevate the flavour of the collage, just like how coconut and onion chutneys complement the idli.

The second collage's dialogue "Romba dhooram poitiya Ram?" which translates to "Have you gone too far Ram?" was recounted by actor Trisha in the romantic-drama film "96". The focus on Trisha's distant aesthetic resonates with the dialogue. Additionally, tidbits from the song "Yamunai Aatrile" have been visually incorporated in the collage as well.

The third collage's "Did you see it? Daddy's signature!" dialogue belongs to the newcomer Arjun Das, who is known for his bass-baritone voice. Originally from the short film "Random Numbers", this collage showcases a glitchy aesthetic in line with the plot of the movie revolving around misusing technology for carrying out silly pranks.

The next three collages in the series encompass cute and humourous dialogues from some of my favourite Tamil movies.

"Neela colour satta potturndhaa, super ah irundhurkum!", also known in English as "It would have been absolutely superb if you had worn a blue shirt!" is the dialogue in the fourth collage. It was uttered by actor Manisha Koirala in the movie "Mudhalvan". Her rural background in the movie combined with her love for actor Arjun's character as she yearned for him wearing a blue shirt is depicted accordingly through the visual elements.

Everyone wants some peace and quiet after quite a lot of hustling. The fifth collage's dialogue "Dei, summa iru da, naaney nondhu poyirken" which translates to "Dude, please be quiet, I am very tired." perfectly resonates with everyone's moods of seeking a calm atmosphere amidst all the tension. Actor SJ Suryah's narrated this dialogue in the movie "Nenjam Marappathillai" after committing a gruesome act involving farming tools, which are appropriately represented in the collage.

To top it off with something sweet, the sixth collage's dialogue "Dei thambi, rose milk vaangi tharen da" was recounted by actor Samantha in the movie "Mersal". Literally translating to "Hey brother, I'll get you some rose milk", Samantha details out this dialogue to bribe actor Vijay's character in the movie to make him divulge details about the protagonist (which is none other than himself).
